Calling all Deodorant/Anti perspirant Experts?
I've been doing a litle bit of research... I've noticed that with all the different product out there, the pecerentage of Aluminum ranges from 14.8%-20%. Okay, so I'm assuming the larger the amount the more effective the product is, right?
Well, how is that both the Dove-ultimate clear & Degree-ultra clear both have only 14.8% and promise to give all day protection? Or Adidas-3 Action promises to give 48-hour protection, but only has 16% of the Aluminum in it? I could understand if your a person who doesn't have too much trouble with sweat or BO. But really, if your a person who sweats a lot, or lives in a HOT environment, how on earth are these products supposed to give you "outstanding" protection?
Also, most of the products have Chlorohydrex in them.But I've noticed that the prefix is different in certain brands. Like;
Dove has"Tetra"chlorohydrex,Lady Speed Stick has "penta" chlorohydrex, and Secret contains "tri" chlorohydrex. Help me understand.
I wouldn't necessarily equate efficacy with concentration of aluminium compounds.
Aluminium compounds, used in antiperspirants, form complexes with electrolytes (minerals) in sweat to form a sort of plug in the duct of the sweat gland. These plugs are removed over time by natural shedding or sloughing of the skin. The blockage of sweat glands by the plugs reduce the amount of sweat excreted, thus reducing the available sweat for bacterial fermentation (this causes the BO smell). This process of reducing sweat excretion varies from individual to individual.
Aluminium is an established neurotoxin. Aluminium chloride, commonly found in antiperspirants, is also commonly used in studies of aluminium-induced neurotoxicity. Research has illustrated that the aluminium salts used in antiperspirants have detrimental effects on a number of non-human species: primates, rats, dogs, among others. This may be what one poster was touching on with respect to the harmful effects of aluminium.
Chlorohydrex is just another ingredient in the products - it is complexed with aluminium (e.g., aluminum dichlorohydrex in polyethylene glycol, aluminum chlorohydrex in polyethylene glycol, etc.)
